We often encounter the idea of “essence” in various aspects of life. A perfume might capture the essence of lavender. Some complex systems are, in essence, a series of simple processes working together. And, of course, time is always of the essence. But have you considered applying the concept of essence on a much more personal level, within your home or office?

At Essence & Purpose Interior Design, my mission goes beyond creating an appealing aesthetic and functional flow for living and working spaces. Defining Essence

"Essence is the intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of something, especially something abstract, that determines its character." — Oxford Languages

The term essence comes from the Latin word essentia, which derives from esse, meaning "to be." Essence is abstract and intangible; you cannot touch or see it directly. Yet, it is this internal and essential nature that defines the character of a person or thing. According to Merriam-Webster, essence is "the most significant element, quality, or aspect of a thing or person."

Read that again: Essence is the MOST SIGNIFICANT feature of every individual thing in this world. It is what makes each item or person unique. Think of the distinct colors and scents of various flowers, the unique sound of your favorite uncle's voice, or the specific beliefs and practices that shape your cultural background. While there may be similarities between groups, there is something that sets each of us apart — THAT is your essence.

Making Essence Personal

Many of us suppress our true selves, often striving to emulate others who seem to fit the mold of perfection or success. However, there is no single path to success or happiness. Instead of trying to "keep up with the Joneses," take the time to understand and appreciate what makes you one-of-a-kind.

Consider your favorite items in your wardrobe — what makes them your favorites? Reflect on your favorite music and movie genres, the activities you enjoy in your free time, and how your career or job impacts you. What are your favorite colors and foods? Treat this process as if you are getting to know a new person. This self-discovery is a crucial step towards living your dream life. If you don’t truly know yourself, how can you live the life you’ve always dreamed of?

Bringing Your Essence Into Your Spaces

When you fully embrace your essence, you will naturally feel uncomfortable when your surroundings do not align with your true self. Whether it’s a person whose values clash with yours or a physical space that feels stifling, it’s important to make changes that support your true self.

Be realistic about what you can adjust. Focus on factors within your control, rather than those requiring external intervention. For instance, while you may not be able to relocate your office, you can arrange its items to better meet your needs. Financial constraints may prevent a full home renovation, but you can rearrange your space, add your favorite colors, or create a dedicated area for a cherished hobby.

The key to these changes is understanding who you truly are and deciding to embrace that persona. Even amid significant life changes, like marriage or parenting, staying true to your values and what brings your essence alive will help you remain grounded and adaptable.
